YOU ARE (NOT) CHOPPED – Food Network fans spotted a familiar face this month on the show “Chopped”: Madison’s Heritage Tavern owner and chef Dan Fox competed in the first round of the Julia Child’s Kitchen competition. Fox, a James Beard award semifinalist, is among 16 chefs in the five-part tournament with a $25,000 prize. This month, he impressed the judges in his Food Network debut enough to secure a place in the finale, which airs Dec. 12.
MVP ODDS – History suggests Giannis is actually less likely to win MVP today than he was prior to the Lillard deal. Why? Championship-winning NBA teams rarely create MVPs. The last seven winners have been the only All-NBA players on their team’s roster. But Giannis does have one thing they don’t… read more here.
PET PROFILE – Did you know that one-third of all families own a dog? U.S. News & World Reports’ 360 Reviews recently released the most popular names of 2023 nationwide, and here are Wisconsin’s top 5: Bella, Luna, Charlie, Lucy, and Buddy. Santa Claus is comin’ to town! Here’s what to know before you go
|
This is Santa’s busiest time of year. But somehow, he still makes time for plenty of stops throughout the Badger State!
Here are a few places you can find him over the next few weeks:
Wisconsin Malls
Santa visits most indoor shopping centers daily through Christmas Eve. Some require appointments, though, especially if you want a photo! Click here for details on Santa visits at Wisconsin’s eight biggest malls.
East Troy Christmas Train
The East Troy Railroad Museum runs several Christmas trains each holiday season. Riders board at the Depot and take a 30-minute ride to the Elegant Farmer, and Santa’s Wisconsin workshop! Spend an hour with Santa before heading back. The night train is the same trip, but with several upgrades including First Class dining cars, hot cocoa (adult versions too!), cookies, beer, wine, and other surprises. Click here to learn more and book your ride.
Lake Geneva Santa Cruise
Take a boat trip to Santa’s Hideaway on Lake Geneva. The 40-minute journey includes magical light displays created by Gage Marine and Lake Geneva Cruise Line. When you get close to the shore, you’ll see Santa’s Hideaway. He won’t board the boat, but the “Big Man” himself will read the names of all the kids on the boat who’ve made his “Nice List.” Click here for this year’s schedule and ticket information.

How the state Supreme Court’s latest case could affect you… and the 2024 election
|
For the past dozen years, you may have found yourself living in legislative and congressional districts that could have been and should have been more competitive. The Wisconsin Supreme Court is
now weighing whether the current maps of those districts were intentionally created to be so unbalanced they violated the state constitution’s protections for voters. If judges say they were, they could order new maps to be drawn, thus making your vote even more valuable in 2024.
Republicans redrew political maps in 2011, giving themselves significant advantages that were
reaffirmed two years ago by a state Supreme Court controlled by conservatives. How significant? Numerous elections show Wisconsin voters almost evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, and yet Republicans control
almost two-thirds of the seats in the Assembly and Senate. That’s a textbook definition of gerrymandering—rigging the maps to be way out of proportion to what one party would normally see for voter support.
This year’s election of Justice Janet Protasiewicz gave progressives a 4-3 court majority, and those four justices agreed to hear a new challenge to the maps—based on the way
Wisconsin law says districts should try to maintain communities of interest and not split existing municipal boundaries. It’s too early to say what the seven justices will ultimately decide—and whether any new maps could even be drawn in time for the November 2024 elections—but keep an eye on our coverage so that you might feel even more empowered when it’s time to make some big decisions next year.
