Maybe we should’ve called it our “Question of the Fortnight” since it’s actually stretching over two weeks while we’re on a break.
Where exactly does “up north” begin?
You’ve already given us some great answers in the category of “Other.”
“Up North starts where the deciduous trees stop and the conifers take over.”
“Anywhere outside of Milwaukee County, if you are a Milwaukee County native!”
“As a transplanted Chicagoan, up north starts at the state line!”
“Up North begins just north of Green Bay where Hwy. 41 and Hwy. 141 split. Either way past the split you are now Up North!”
“I believe that up north is a state of mind. It’s that moment when you feel yourself start to relax, really relax. As someone who is already an up-norther in New Richmond, it’s that moment when the car is packed and we are on our way.”
We know there were two notable omissions from the list. One was Highway 64 through Bloomer, Medford, Antigo, to Marinette.
The other wasn’t quite an omission; we just wanted to see how many smart-alecks would respond with Highway 2, which would make “up north” last for about 30 yards in some parts of Ashland! Nothing against the good people of the Bayfield Peninsula, but Wisconsin’s “up north” takes up a little more space than that!
