In Marquette University Law School’s most recent and final poll before the Aug. 11 primary, Rep. Francesca Hong maintains her lead in the Democratic field for Wisconsin governor.
Of those surveyed in Marquette’s poll, 38% responded with a vote for Hong, a 4% difference from Tuesday’s State Navigate poll sponsored by UpNorthNews and Main Street Action.
Marquette’s poll comes just one day after the UpNorthNews poll, which found Hong earning 42% of votes—her first time above the 40% mark.
Both polls then asked their undecided respondents (22% in the UpNorthNews poll, 34% in the Marquette poll) which candidate they were leaning toward supporting. The UpNorthNews poll boosted Hong to 44%, and in Marquette’s poll, up to 46%.
One of the most notable differences between the two polls, however, is the second place candidate.
Marquette’s poll found former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes in second place with 16% support, while the UpNorthNews’ poll placed Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley in second with 15% of the vote.
This is Marquette’s first poll since Crowley reentered the race earlier this month. He sits in third place with 7%.
Sen. Kelda Roys and Joel Brennan are tied with 2% each, according to Marquette’s poll.
After undecided voters were asked to lean toward a candidate, both polls show roughly 13-14% remained noncommittal.
The previous Marquette poll, released on July 22, found Hong in the lead with 26% and Barnes in second with 15%. Meanwhile, 45% of Democratic voters were undecided.
The poll was conducted from July 22–27 among 407 registered voters who said they plan to vote in the Democratic primary. The survey has a margin of error of ±6.6%.
Wisconsin’s partisan primary takes place on Aug. 11. The winner will face the presumptive Republican nominee, US Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) in November.
Early in-person absentee voting is already underway and continues through Aug. 9. On Election Day, Aug. 11, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
