Wisconsin ‘celebrities’ share their Thanksgiving traditions
|
If watching the parade, cooking a turkey, and taking a nap are Thanksgiving day staples for your family, you’re like a lot of Wisconsin… and America. All three are among the country’s Top 10 Thanksgiving Day Traditions. But many families add their own unique twists.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel asked a few Wisconsin “celebrities” to share their family traditions–from menu staples and conversation starters to post-dinner activities.
Comedian Charlie Behrens, host of “The Manitowoc Minute,” said he always makes a point to ask everyone at the table who their current favorite politician is. Sounds on brand.
LeRoy Butler, former Packer, Hall of Famer, and proud owner of nearly 2,000 pots and pans, is in charge of making 32 sides including mac and cheese, green beans, and creamed corn. “Every year, I say I’m going to cut down, but I don’t,” he said.
And Toya Washington, former WISN-TV news anchor, serves not one or two, but an entire “pie bar” for dessert. As for what she’s eating? “If given the choice, it’s sweet potato pie from Mr. Dye’s Pies or a baked-in-a-bag Elegant Farmer apple or rhubarb pie,” she said, before adding, “Who am I kidding? It’s all of the above!”

BOWL BOUND! – For the 22nd year in a row (the third-longest streak in NCAA history), the Badgers are headed to a Bowl game. But, this season, the road to 6 wins hasn’t been easy… or pretty. Wisconsin beat Nebraska in overtime Saturday night to extend their season into December (or January.) Where are they headed? Click here for the latest expert projections.
THANKSGIVING FORECAST – Rain and a little snow could be on the menu Thursday, depending on where you’re headed. This week, Wisconsin’s temperatures dropped nearly 30 degrees across much of the state. Click here for the latest forecast where you live.
BEARLY THERE – Bear season was a bust for many Wisconsin hunters, and state wildlife officials believe there’s a simple reason why: Acorns. The number of black bears killed by hunters in 2023 dropped to a 15-year low, new numbers show. But hunters in some parts of the state fared significantly better than others. Find out where and why.
TV TIMETABLE – Good news: Both Hollywood strikes are over and your favorite shows will be returning soon. Deadline is constantly updating this list with the latest premiere dates for new and returning shows on every major network and streaming service. Click here to find out when you’ll be able to watch your favorites again.
NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAYS – From festive classics like “White Christmas” and “Miracle on 34th Street” to modern favorites like “Elf” and “The Santa Clause,” find out when and where more than 100 holiday TV specials and movies are streaming this season using this guide here.

7 Wisconsin Turkey Trots worth the drive
|
It’s not too late to start a new family tradition, and sign up for one of the state’s best Turkey Trots! Many cities offer 10K, 5K, and/or 2-mile courses; some even let your dog trot with you.
The best part: Most Turkey Trots raise money for a local food pantry or charity–so while you’re burning off calories before the big meal, you’re also ensuring those in need will consume enough.
If you’re not a runner, don’t worry: Walking counts as “trotting!” Turkey Trots focus on finding the fun in exercise–encouraging participants to dress in costume and, in some cases, serving post-race pumpkin pie.
Travel Wisconsin compiled a list of seven local turkey trots that are worth traveling to, what makes them unique, and how to make a weekend out of it! On the list include races in Stevens Point, Minocqua, and Manitowoc.
