Considering it’s one of the first states in the Midwest to boast a diversified, industrialized economy, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Wisconsin has been home to labor union activists for over 150 years. From the industrial boom that hit Milwaukee in the 19th century to the rise of 21st-century labor activism, Wisconsin’s unions have had a long history, marked by triumphs and tragedies alike.

Looking at the history of labor unions in Wisconsin, there have been fights, tensions, and troubles, but also progress and innovation. Here’s a timeline of seven crucial events in the history of labor unions in the Badger State.

WI-born veteran, congressman calls out Van Orden for Trump support

A Colorado congressman who was born and raised in Wisconsin returned to his home state to tell veterans and other voters why an Army Ranger like him is campaigning to unseat a Navy Seal like his colleague, Rep. Derrick Van Orden. 

Before President Donald Trump attacked Iran alongside Israel, Rep. Jason Crow told an Eau Claire audience about his US Army deployments that took him to Iraq and Afghanistan. After separating from the military, he used his legal training to help veterans secure their benefits and was elected to Congress in 2018 to serve Colorado. Van Orden served in the US Navy for 26 years including five combat deployments. Both men now serve on the House Armed Services Committee.
