While almost every fan of the Green Bay Packers is getting excited for Sunday’s season opener, one fan is starting to sound the alarm about a financial time bomb that could ruin the franchise in a few years. Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson has published a new comprehensive history of the team, starting with the early years when it nearly out of business multiple times. Nelson says a new threat is on the horizon, now that the National Football League is allowing private equity firms to buy a percentage of privately held teams — meaning every team except the Packers will soon have access to a large pile of money that Green Bay won’t have in order to remain competitive.
