Poll workers, also called election inspectors, play an essential role in the election process. Becoming a Wisconsin poll worker is a great way to contribute to your community, help protect elections, and see the democratic process up close–all while getting paid.

“I really appreciate our democracy,”

said Tori D., an Eau Claire poll worker we talked to during the August primary. “And I just wanted to be a little more involved and be active in helping keep our country the way that it is.”

“I love everyone that I work with and it’s not too hard to learn,” Tori said about her 10 years as a poll worker. “Satisfying? Absolutely! We do get paid a little bit for this job, but even if they didn’t pay me, I would do it.”

Here’s everything you need to know to become a poll worker in Wisconsin:

What is a poll worker?

Poll workers are trained local government workers who assist with running local elections. Each county, city, and township in Wisconsin hires and pays election inspectors for the early voting period and on Election Day.

Poll worker responsibilities can include checking in voters, helping people register to vote, checking photo IDs, and processing absentee ballots.

What are the requirements?

Poll worker requirements vary by jurisdiction. Generally, poll workers in Wisconsin must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Be an eligible voter in the county they plan to serve in
  • Be able to speak, read, and write fluently in the English language
  • NOT be a candidate for any office to be voted on at the polling place at that election
