Both programs represent promises made to every American worker and every vulnerable American facing disabilities or poverty. They were made when Depression-era memories were still fresh of how hard times could get for people due to age or health.
Now, concern about sickness and poverty have been replaced with a political desire to make life more comfortable for the very wealthy. Is that really America’s new promise—counting on the benevolence of billionaires?
