$0 FOR SCHOOLS? – Public education advocates are outraged over Wisconsin’s new budget. It offers no increase in general state aid for public schools, meaning the state’s share won’t keep up with inflation. Wisconsin will continue to see a parade of local school referendums that seek higher property taxes to make up the difference.
Gov. Tony Evers and Democrats who voted for the budget say school districts will have new dollars to spend because the bill provides a boost in state aid that goes to local schools for special education costs, freeing up funds that can be used elsewhere. Critics say the increased special education aid also doesn’t keep up with inflation, leaving school districts in an ongoing position of considering cuts to programs or staff.
