Out of town on Election Day? That shouldn’t stop you from voting this year, as early voting is an easy and convenient way to make your voice heard in this election season. If you have questions about how to cast your ballot before Election Day, don’t fret – here’s the rundown on early voting this year.
When?
You can vote early up to two weeks before an election date. Specific dates and times for early voting will vary by location – you can check dates based on your city at the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin website. You can also input your address on the MyVote Wisconsin portal, which will lead you to a comprehensive list of all early voting options in your area by date. Note that state law prohibits voter registration on the Saturday, Sunday, and Monday prior to each election date.
Where?
Early voting locations will once again vary by location, but can be easily found using the MyVote Wisconsin portal. As opposed to Election Day, where you are required to vote at your assigned polling place, there are multiple options for where to cast your ballot if you plan on voting early. MyVote lists all locations near you, as well as their addresses and hours of operation.
How?
The early voting process is very similar to the absentee voting process, even though it’s completed in person. You will have to present a valid ID to the absentee clerk and verify that you are registered to vote (although you can still register at the polls). The clerk will present you with an absentee ballot and envelope for you to sign and date. You will then be given privacy to complete your ballot, and the clerk will sign it as your witness. The ballot will be delivered to your clerk’s office at the end of the day, and it will remain sealed until it is counted on Election Day.
