Van Orden’s deepfake videos don’t violate state law, co-sponsor of the law says they’re repulsive

Wisconsin is one of the few states that has a specific law on the books requiring political ads to label any fake video using generative AI. A co-sponsor of the law said the rule doesn’t apply to deepfake videos posted by Congressman Derrick Van Orden on social media, but Rep. Jodi Emerson calls them “repulsive” just the same. Rep. Emerson added that the videos go against the spirit of the law that holds elected officials to a higher standard than the general public when it comes to potentially fooling voters.
