Flag flies in recognition of Pride Month.
For the second time in the state’s history, the Rainbow Pride Flag will fly over the Capitol for the month of June in Wisconsin.
In recognition of Pride Month, the flag was raised at 1 p.m. Friday and will continue to fly until sunset on June 30.
“Wisconsin is a proud state that recognizes that diversity makes our communities and our state stronger,” said Gov. Tony Evers in a statement Friday. “I am proud to once again celebrate the diversity and resiliency of the LGBTQ community this Pride Month and to share this symbol of our commitment to continue to do the work needed to create a more equitable, just, and inclusive state for all.”
Evers is the first governor to pass executive orders to fly the flag.
Pride Month has its roots in the Stonewall Riots of June, 1969. A police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, led to violent demonstrations and the beginnings of a movement to fight for rights, respect and pride.
The U.S. flag and Wisconsin state flag will continue flying on the East wing flagpole above the Rainbow Pride flag. The POW-MIA flag will continue flying on the North wing flagpole as it does every day.
