As Starbucks employees continue to strike against their company’s anti-union behavior, your daily morning routine may be threatened. Luckily, Wisconsin has a long list of locally-owned cafes that not only serve coffee, but their communities.
Seth’s Coffee
If you want your coffee guaranteed fresh, Seth’s Coffee is the place to go. “We brew every cup by the cup, so you are only getting something that is handcrafted to order and not made in bulk ahead of time,” the message on Seth’s website promises. Started and operated by a couple in Little Chute, Seth’s now has three locations around the Appleton area that serve every type of coffee you can imagine.
Stone Creek Coffee
As a coffee company whose founding ethos is to be a force for good in the local community, Stone Creek Coffee, which operates eight cafes across the state, is an ethically-sound cafe to add to your list. If you don’t live near one, order a bag of their signature brews online (and enjoy free carbon-neutral ground shipping). And if you’re interested in becoming your own personal barista, sign up for one of their classes to learn the basics of brewing coffee like a pro!
The Goat Coffee House – Eau Claire
The Goat Coffee House is a must-try if you’re around Eau Claire. Environmental friendliness is top of mind for co-owners Ryan and Laura, so all of their cups and dishware are compostable and all of their organic coffee beans are locally roasted in Duluth. The cafe has the aesthetic of a quintessential coffee shop, too–perfect for getting some work, or reading, done.
Bella Goose Coffee
Bella Goose puts hospitality first in their cozy cafe environment, making it well worth a visit to one of their two locations in the Dells. This company also has a sister shop in Thailand, which employs people who don’t have consistent housing. To top it all off, Bella Goose’s coffee is freshly roasted in-house and all of its flavor syrups are homemade!
The Open Door Coffeehouse
The Open Door Coffeehouse is committed to more than just coffee. This non-profit is focused on public service and community building alongside serving delicious beverages. With mentor programs offered to the people of Mayville and the greater Milwaukee area, Open Door serves a sense of belonging to everyone who visits. The cafe even has a family room geared towards customers with kids!
Colectivo
Colectivo is one of the state’s biggest local coffee chains. Today, there are more than 15 Colectivo locations across Milwaukee and Madison, plus five additional shops in Chicago. The company partners with local producers to source its coffee beans from Riverwest, Milwaukee, and additional ingredients from Wisconsin farmers.
