8 best places to get beer cheese soup in all of Wisconsin

Many restaurants in Wisconsin serve beer cheese soup as a nod to the state’s beer and cheese industries, but here are the best eight.

Two of Wisconsin’s most beloved foods—cheese and beer—come together in an equally popular soup. This creamy concoction is delicious enough to stand on its own for lunch or dinner and also works well as a tasty side to a sandwich.

You’ll find beer cheese soup on many restaurant menus across Wisconsin, especially at brewery taprooms where the beer folded into the soup is crafted on-site. Here are eight of the best spots across the state to indulge in the dish.

1. Barrique Bistro & Wine Bar – Lake Geneva

Across the street from this resort’s town namesake body of water—Geneva Lake—is this wine bar with indoor and outdoor seating, along with a hearty food menu. On a chilly night, hunker down inside with a bowl of its beer cheese soup, featuring aged and sharp Wisconsin cheddar plus gluten-free beer. Although this is a wine bar, the beer list is filled with quite a few local beers, from Low Daily’s Cowboy Cowboy and Hefeweizen (Burlington) and Duesterbeck’s Nutty Bills (Elkhorn).

2. Eau Claire Cheese and Deli – Eau Claire

Don’t be fooled by the name: this cheese and deli-meat shop also whips up amazing sandwiches and soups. That includes its beer cheese soup. Open for 30-some years, this food-focused business knows (and retails) Wisconsin cheeses very well and sources only the best for this delicious soup.

3. Red Eye Brewing Company – Wausau

As a brewery with a farm-to-table menu, of course the soup line-up also folds in locally sourced ingredients. Beer cheese soup is among the seasonal soups and is available in two sizes. Given that this is a brewery, it’s totally possible—and encouraged—to pair a pint of beer with a hot cup or bowl of beer cheese soup.

4. The Old Fashioned – Madison

What makes this tavern-style eatery’s beer cheese soup so unique is that it’s topped with popcorn. Order it in a cup or a bowl. Beer lovers who want more beer than what’s in the soup can choose from 52 Wisconsin beers on tap and at least 100 Wisconsin beers in a can or bottle.

5. Fatzo’s Subs & Pizza – Sturgeon Bay

While celebrated for its sandwiches and pizzas (there are 19 hot subs alone, plus cold options, too), another reason to visit this Door County spot is to sip its beer cheese soup. This is an ideal pairing to a hot sub on a cold wintry day.

6. Bass Bay Brewhouse – Muskego

As the name implies, this restaurant is big on serving beer. Exclusive collaborations with Explorium Brewpub, a local craft brewery, are one example. Its bier cheese soup falls perfectly in step. Wisconsin cheddar, Lakefront Brewery’s Riverwest Stein, and cream are blended into this delicious soup and then topped with Pop’s Kettle Corn’s cheddar flavor.

7. Milwaukee Brat House – Milwaukee

With two locations—downtown Milwaukee and the nearby suburb of Shorewood—this restaurant’s theme is all about brats but also services other culinary categories. But its beer cheese soup is also famous—and actually called Famous Beer Cheese Soup—and landed coverage in USA Today. Wisconsin cheddar, a Lakefront Brewery IPA, hickory-smoked bacon, and roasted red peppers.

8. Delafield Brewhaus – Delafield

Doubling as a brewery and a restaurant, this Lake Country spot makes a beer cheese soup using white cheddar along with amber ale. Try it in a cup or a bowl. Sip that along with a beer from this brewery, whether it’s one of the five year-round beers or eight seasonal beers.
