The Republican-controlled House Agriculture Committee approved its draft of a proposed Farm Bill on Friday that includes cuts of $27 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over the next ten years and would cancel nearly $14 billion for climate practices from the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
The Farm Bill is a package of farm, trade, nutrition, and conservation programs that’s usually reviewed and renewed every five years but is now seven months late because of the Republican demands for cuts that are opposed by Senate Democrats.
Speaking on WKOW’s “Capital City Sunday,” Jason Mugnaini from the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation said that he’s excited to see some movement on a Farm Bill and that members of both parties are looking at enhancements to some safety net programs for farmers—but he says more negotiation is needed for Congress to pass the legislation before a September 30 deadline.
