Wisconsin stargazers have a great chance to catch a glimpse as the Milky Way makes its annual debut in skies across the country.

A time of year known as “Milky Way season” has arrived in the Northern Hemisphere, which includes the continental United States, with the best time to view the Milky Way typically running from March to September, USA TODAY reported.

The band of stars recognizable as the Milky Way, our home galaxy, stretches across the sky from northeast to southwest. If you can locate the Big Dipper constellation or the North Star, look to the south to find the Milky Way.

Under most conditions, it doesn’t take any equipment to view the Milky Way Galaxy, just your eyes.

What time of night is the Milky Way visible in eastern Wisconsin?

Most of the Milky Way is currently visible in the night sky if you’re looking at the right times, according to the Milwaukee Astronomical Society’s night sky chart from Heavens Above

Stars become visible just after sunset – currently around 7 p.m. in Milwaukee – and stay visible until around sunrise. The sky is darkest between twilights, beginning around 8:30 p.m. and ending about 5:30 a.m.

This ideal time range will shrink on both ends as summer approaches and the sun is out longer, but the Milky Way will stay visible in the night sky until September.

The astronomical show will get easier to see toward the end of March and reach peak visibility around June.

One viewing spot not far from Milwaukee

Richard Bong State Recreation Area may fall on the brighter side of the sky spectrum, according to darksitefinder.com, but its location between Milwaukee and Chicago helps make it shine.

There are no direct streetlights, camping is allowed at two campgrounds and the general entrance fee from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. is $13 for a day pass.

Dark skies can be found in northern Wisconsin

While you don’t need extreme darkness to see the Milky Way, Wisconsin has some good patches of night sky away from the cities.

The northern side of the state is home to its darkest skies. Once you pass Green Bay or Wausau, the skies only get darker for miles.

Many people flock to Door County for that reason. Newport State Park in Door County is Wisconsin’s only Dark Sky Park from DarkSky International.

If you’re looking for more accessible dark skies, the map on darksitefinder.com shows that parks between Green Bay and northern Michigan are among the darkest.

What are the best places in Wisconsin to view the night sky?

Here is a list of Wisconsin locations that could offer some of the best views of the night sky.

  • Newport State Park, Ellison Bay
  • Driftless Region, Wisconsin
  • Harrington Beach State Park, Belgium
  • Kettle Moraine State Forest, Eagle
  • Kohler-Andrae State Park, Sheboygan
  • Parnell Tower, Plymouth
