Wisconsin and North Carolina are known as “swing states,” evenly divided among Democratic and Republican voters. But there’s no similarity in how two GOP senators from those states are approaching the Trump tax megabill. While Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson has been demanding even more cuts to vital programs like Medicaid, Sen. Thom Tillis has been privately warning senators how much those cuts would harm people in North Carolina and across the country.
When Tillis voted against one part of the bill process last weekend, President Donald Trump called for him to be challenged in a Republican primary next year. Instead, Tillis just announced he’s retiring and won’t run for another term. It creates an open seat that Democrats have a chance of picking up, especially if the cuts from Johnson, Trump, and other Republicans backfire once voters learn the true impact of the bill.
