In the letter, the former staffers “jointly declared” that they’ll be voting for the Harris-Walz ticket in November’s election, and condemned Trump’s policies, as well as Project 2025.
In an open letter released Monday, more than 200 Republican staffers who worked for both Bush presidents, as well as Sen. Mitt Romney and the late Sen. John McCain, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
In the letter, the former staffers noted that they previously came out against Trump’s bid for president in 2020 and said that they “jointly declare” that they’ll be voting for the Harris-Walz ticket in November’s election.
The letter goes on to condemn Trump’s policies, as well as Project 2025, a 900-page blueprint for a second Trump term. The staffers wrote that the proposals laid out in Project 2025 “will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions.”
The staffers further argue that Trump’s approach to foreign policy poses a threat to democratic movements in other countries, as well. They conclude the letter by urging other Republicans and independents to “take a brave stand once more, to vote for leaders that will strive for consensus, not chaos; that will work to unite, not divide; that will make our country and our children proud” by voting for a Harris-Walz ticket as well.
“Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s to be expected,” they wrote. “The alternative, however, is simply untenable.”
This letter comes after several prominent Republicans delivered openly critical remarks about President Trump at the Democratic National Convention last week.
The group also adds to the more than two dozen Republicans who have pledged their support for Harris. These people include former governors, members of Congress, and former Trump administration officials.
Bush, McCain, and Romney themselves have all either spoken out against Trump in the past and/or have been targets of the former president’s notorious inflammatory attacks.
“What America is as a nation, what has allowed us to be the most powerful nation on Earth, and the leader of the Earth is the character of the people who have been our leaders,” Romney said earlier this year. “Having a president who is so defaulted of character would have an enormous impact on the character of America.”
