Candidate wants to phase out school vouchers in WI

📚 Here’s how Wisconsin’s school voucher system is structured: The state deducts private school voucher funding from a public school district’s state aid before any of the money goes to your local school district. (Many taxpayers aren’t aware of that.) To make up for that lost revenue, local school districts usually increase their local property tax levy. Traditionally, this cost has been lumped entirely under the public school district’s line item, obscuring how much money actually leaves the public system. A growing number of Wisconsin cities are now showing the cost of private school vouchers on local property tax bills, and there is a strong push by public education advocates and Democratic lawmakers to make this a statewide requirement. Republicans have consistently blocked efforts to provide that extra level of taxpayer transparency. Jeremiah Frederickson, the Democratic nominee for Assembly District 92—which covers parts of Buffalo, Dunn, Pepin, Pierce, St. Croix, and Trempealeau counties—says it’s important. ✏️: Salina Heller
