10 cozy waterfront cabins to book this winter in Wisconsin

Warm up this winter at one of these cozy Wisconsin cabin rentals that are all nestled next to lakes.

Waterfront cabins are often synonymous with summer and lake activities like swimming, kayaking, and sailing. But come winter, there’s a peacefulness on that lake with an absence of jet skis and other watercraft, allowing for beautiful vistas as you sit inside the cabin.

Here are cozy waterfront cabins around Wisconsin with walls of windows framing lake views and other amenities like fireplaces, comfy sofas, and a kitchen to whip up hot chocolate, soups, or other yummy meals.

1. Camp Wandawega, Elkhorn

This newer-build home (with three bedrooms and two baths) at Camp Wandawega, a retreat for creatives with a summer-camp-like vibe, may be more appropriate for winter than the vintage cabins on site. The living room features a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and the kitchen is fit for a chef. The entire property hugs Lake Wandawega, which may be too cold to swim in this time of year but still provides a pretty view.

2. Arsham Cabin, Kohler

Earlier this year, this luxury plumbing manufacturer’s tourism arm debuted two cabins. This one (with two bedrooms and one bath) is perched above Lake Michigan and decked out with nautical, lake-inspired décor, including whites and blues, designed by Daniel Arsham. There’s also a wraparound porch where, no matter the weather, you can soak up the lake view from above.

3. Canoe Bay, Chetek

On the grounds of a former scouting camp and along Dead Goose Lake, Canoe Bay features Prairie-style cabins. Frank Lloyd Wright’s protégé John Rattenbury designed Edgewood Villa and Rattenbury Cottage, but there are others to rent, too. You’ll find fireplaces, soaking tubs, a dining area, and warm-toned wood paneling. An A-frame library stocked with books is paired with a lake view.

4. Birchwood Lake Log Cabin Retreat, Campbellsport

With four bedrooms and two baths, there’s plenty of room to spread out in this VRBO cabin. The high ceilings coax in natural light along with views of Birchwood Lake, while knotty-pine walls and log-cabin-like furnishings make the place feel cozy. There’s even a hammock in which to unwind (in the living room) and a whirlpool tub in one bath.

5. Baileys Harbor Cabin, Baileys Harbor

During Door County’s quiet season, you can score good deals on cabins and that includes this A-frame on Kangaroo Lake’s South Unit. With one bedroom and bath each, this would be perfect for a couple or a creative retreat. Tucked into a woodsy setting, there’s also a patio with twinkling lights, a grill and seating, plus a wood-burning stove inside and a fire pit outside.

6. Postcard Cabins, Wild Rose

Part of a collection of Postcard Cabins’ tiny homes around the country, these cabins are arranged in a campground-like setting (but with plenty of privacy). While the kitchen is small—just like one in a tiny home ought to be—it’s smartly designed, and there’s plenty of room to cook on a two-burner stovetop or store refrigerated groceries. There’s also a private shower.

7. The Bay by Door County Cabin Collective, Jacksonport

What makes this three-bedroom, two-bath cabin so cozy is the second-floor sunroom overlooking Clark Lake, with a wall of windows and a 1918 Edison record player. Relaxing around the outdoor fire pit is another great way to experience the natural setting. Curl up with a good book in front of the cabin’s pellet stove and prepare meals in the fully stocked kitchen for a “home away from home” vibe.

8. Sunset Point Lake House, Oshkosh

To find this two-bedroom, one-bath cabin, look for the bright yellow door that pops against the dark grey siding. In the living room, you’ll find books, board games, a record player, and a television (with streaming capabilities) for a cozy night in, along with a malm-style fireplace. While you may not be able to walk Lake Butte des Morts’ rocky shoreline in winter, the sunsets are amazing, says the owner.

9. BL2 Cottage, Montello

With Scandinavian-style décor, this two-bedroom, one-bath cottage with knotty pine walls and vaulted ceilings is just a one-minute walk to Buffalo Lake (it’s right across the street!). There’s a swing chair on the porch and an outdoor fire pit, along with lots of blankets and an electric-recline sofa in the living room for cozying up.

10. Lakefront Chalet, Wisconsin Dells

This chalet-style cabin’s wraparound deck affords views of Parker Lake, and the lake vista outside the home’s walls of windows is also sweet. Warm up in front of the outdoor fire pit, play board games on the screened porch, or hang out in the lake-themed loft. Modernized décor throughout remains fun but also chill, such as vibrant wallpaper and hung artwork (such as a wooden canoe paddle).
