Yessenia Ruano, a former Milwaukee teacher’s aide, is back home after spending more than a year in El Salvador with her two 11-year-old daughters. Ruano had been fighting deportation while an immigration application was still pending. But after a Trump administration policy shift allowed ICE to move forward with deportations during that review process, she self-deported last June rather than face forced removal, taking her two U.S.-citizen daughters with her. Now, all three have been allowed to return to the U.S.
