Wisconsin Supreme Court chooses GOP maps that eliminate one Black-majority Assembly district after the US Supreme Court ruled Gov. Evers’ maps aren’t “race-neutral” because they added a district.
Republicans called it racial gerrymandering. State attorney general says it’s “back to the drawing board,” with less than a month until candidates for Legislature can start to file.
By choosing Evers’ modified option, court rules 4-3 against GOP efforts to tilt the maps even further from statewide voter makeup.
The maps would still give Republicans an advantage in Wisconsin elections, but not one as large as GOP-drawn maps.
Gov. Evers: “Republicans will have to do better than this if they expect me to sign either of these bills—they need to go back to the drawing board.”
